In color film processing skipping the bleach stage of development, thus not removing the silver from the film, would result in high contrast images with desaturated colors. When used with certain lighting conditions the effect would give a very moody output to the final image. In the digital era cameras do not use silver to render their pictures and as such alternative ways are necessary to recreate this effect. To date numerous commercial filters advertise “Bleaching” as one of their selling point however the effect is simple enough to make to skip out on that particular purchase.

Shortly after writing “In The Archives” a new backup software came out that sounded very promising, it would backup the alterations made for a RAW file into it’s own database hence rendering the need to backup the layered photoshop files unnecessary, with a possible exemption to photo altering techniques being used on the photo. To implement this fully it was essential to re-process the RAW files using this system to collect the RAW conversion data into this database, which would be then backed up to the same DVD as the photos. A very conscious decision was made at the time to restore all former backups and suspend further ones to a future timedate when the re-processing had caught up to the, at the time, current photo taking.
